Theoretikally R & B

Founded in 2023, Theoretikally R&B (TRNB) is the passion project of longtime college friends. Commonly described as a safe space for R&B, TRNB provides the opportunity to immerse in deep discussion around the soulful sounds, artistry and culture of the genre. Much more than a podcast, Theoretikally R&B is a community dedicated to creating a place to listen, laugh, and learn about all things rhythm and blues. We invite all to join us as we examine and embrace the instruments, artists, and lyrics that define R&B. For Us, R&B music is our love language. We welcome all to communicate with us fluently, consistently and intentionally in this space.

As we prepare to celebrate TRNB's 50th Episode, we wanted to revisit JC and Slap's favorite episode. It had controversy, good vibes and better music! Who did it better? R&B music is evergreen and this episode allowed us to explore different artist interpretation of classic. Who did it better, MJ or Troop? Stevie or Jodeci? Mary or Rolls Royce? Help us contribute to an evergreen debate! What we do know that isn't controversial. These songs are classics!

Theoretikally R&B: Ain't Too Proud to Beg. Episode 47
Wednesday Feb 19, 2025
Wednesday Feb 19, 2025
On this episode of Theoretikally R&B, we discuss the pushing pride to the side for the one you love. The desire to be acknowledged, touched and loved by the object of your desire, can at times lead to begging. From the smooth desperation from Marvin Gaye suggesting a close of distance in 'Distant Lover', to the harmonious hurt of Switch and the comfort that is received when "I Call Your Name". Begging has been part of R&B since the beginning of music. Through the years, Begging has been perfected by the king of the whine, Keith Sweat and danced to by the great Janet Jackson. We even discuss generational begging from Boyz II Men to WanMor giving their versions of "Please don't go". This episode will have you begging for more!

Theoretikally R&B: Give The Drummer Some. Episode 45
Wednesday Jan 29, 2025
Wednesday Jan 29, 2025
There is no better sound at a live concert than hearing "give the Drummer some"! Normally in our discussions on Theoretikally R&B, we discuss the best voices and lyrics of R&B which sometimes has us gloss over the music and musicians that accompany the voices. On this episode, we highlight some of the instruments that battle for top billing on the track. Whether it's the drum solo on 'I want to be free' or the strings on Tony Toni Tone, 'Anniversary'. We take a musical journey in instrumentation starting with the guitar of Ernie Isley and ending with the Saxophone of Boney James.
Hit play and listen for the band's contribution to some of our favorite songs.

Theoretikally R&B: This my Sh*#. Episode 44
Wednesday Jan 22, 2025
Wednesday Jan 22, 2025
For months, Theoretikally has been talking through our love language of music. On this episode, we take that love personal and give you a behind the scene look to demonstrate that we indeed practice what we preach. It doesn't matter if its the 'slow song king kong' hitting you with some Stephanie Mills or the Professor rocking to Leon Thomas, this TRNB show 'just gets better with time' as it without a doubt leaves you 'Rockin after midnight' and the hours before. This episode will have you repeating, "THIS IS MY SHIT!" but 'You already knew that'.
